One third of Brits don't care about 4G

One third of Brits don’t care about 4G a survey by YouGov has found.

The polling company surveyed 1,456 UK residents aged 16 and above. 275 of those questioned already own a 4G phone, while 134 are already usingEverything Everywhere’s 4G service.
Everything Everywhere launched the UK’s first 4G network just over eight months ago.

The survey found that 35 per cent of those questioned have no interest in moving from their 3G service.
On the other hand, it found that 23 per cent of those questioned were “excited” about the prospect of using 4G.
In addition to a lack of interest, many expressed concerns about cost.
Over half said they believe 4G services are too expensive for them. More worryingly for networks, two-thirds said they were not willing to spend money on a new handset just to use 4G.
The poor reception is not down to a lack of awareness about the technology, the YouGov found. However, there is a distinct lack of awareness of what 4G offers over today’s 3G services.
According to the survey, 80 per cent of those questioned said they were aware of 4G. However, only 21 per cent knew what 4G offered.
One third of those who said they knew about 4G had no idea about its benefits.

According to technology and telecoms director at YouGov Russell Feldman, the situation will improve as more operators launch their own 4G networks.
However, he said that a major part of the launch will need to be awareness drives. "That a lot of consumers can’t see the point of 4G presents a real challenge to operators as more of them roll out 4G to their customers.
“The low levels of understanding about what 4G offers indicates that networks need to be savvy when selling it to consumers - showing not just that it exists but also what it does,” he continued.
“Take-up is likely to be a slow burn as consumers hold off making decisions until they see it in action.”
