YouTube gets its geek on

YouTube has announced it will be running its first ever Geek Week programming event from August 4th to August 10th 2013

Apparently, geeks are big on YouTube. According to the video-sharing site, more than half of its top twenty non-music channels are dedicated to "geek culture".
To that end, the Google-owned service is going to put on its first ever Geek Week to celebrate and shine a light on the techy, sci-fi content we know and love.
The week will involve more than 100 YouTube channels chipping in with new videos, series premieres and different collaborations. Subjects will range from science and sci-fi to superheroes, gaming and animation.
"Today's obsession with all-things-geek has sparked a global community on YouTube, enabling fans around the world to express their love of superheroes, comics, gaming, science and sci-fi," said Danielle Tiedt, vice president of marketing at YouTube.
Children's TV show Knightmare will launch a brand new episode on YouTube as part of the Geek Week celebrations and Red Dwarf character Kryten will give a run down each day of the best geeky videos to watch that day.
"We’re excited to shine a spotlight on this global community during Geek Week and debut all-new videos and series created by some of our most popular channel partners,” said Tiedt.
