It may not make assembling the furniture any easier, but the new companion app to IKEA’s 2014 catalog, featuring integrated augmented reality, will at least help determine if that loveseat and chaise lounge is the right fit and color for your living room.
Though the Swedish flat-pack furniture company first experimented with augmented reality in its 2013 catalog, the new version of the app goes well beyond the novelty of interactive pages, videos and photo galleries.
After scanning one of the 90 augmented realty pages with a smartphone or tablet, users set the catalog on the floor, wherever a desired piece of furniture would be placed. The app then superimposes a three-dimensional model on the device’s screen, essentially allowing users to make executive decisions on aesthetics, size and space before purchasing furniture.

In theory, customers could do away with measuring tapes, color samples and having to worry about being stuck with ill-fitting furniture. As someone with a congested living room, thanks to an impulsively acquired couch that’s a tad too big, this app gets my stamp of approval, even if IKEA’s meatballs are full of horse meat.
